e often think of introducing research skills to kids as something that happens in the classroom. However, research skills are just as important at home. With the internet being such a large part of our lives, it's more important than ever to help children learn how to find and use information effectively.

One way to help children develop their research skills is to have them conduct internet research.
We can't deny the importance of internet research in today's society. It is a skill that children need to learn and become independent researchers.

This can be done by having them search for information on a particular topic, and then evaluating the results they find. Additionally, you can also have children compare and contrast different sources of information, and determine which ones are more reliable. By doing this, children will learn how to critically evaluate information and will be better prepared to conduct research in the future.

But It can get boring if we give a topic to kids and see what they find on the internet. So we should look for opportunities to have children be creative in their internet research.

My son wanted headphones for his birthday but I knew it would take too long for me to search and find a good one so I gave this task to him.
His needs- music, games, and online classes
Features he needed- He needed padded headphones that go over the ear not on it. He needed one with good bass and noise cancelling.
Search - I told him the budget range, we discussed the type of headphones he wanted (in-ear, over-ear, etc.), and looked them up on amazon.
Deeper search- Once he was sure which one he wanted, he went on YouTube to make sure they were good quality and worth the money.
Evaluate - He read reviews, compared prices, and looked at the different features of each type of headphone.
Result- We found a great pair of headphones that were well within our budget and he was very happy with his purchase.
This is just one example of how you can help children develop their research skills by having

The best part of this activity was that he did this independently and I only had to guide him a little bit. He was so proud of himself when he found the perfect pair of headphones and saved us money too!
This activity had a purpose, it was something he needed to do, and he learned how to research effectively. And all while having fun!
Otherwise, most of the things that kids do for learning can hardly be related to their daily lives. Most of the research that kids do are on some animal or forest they don't get to see in their lives so it becomes a very dry and theoretical exercise.

If we want to engage kids in their learning, we need to make sure that the tasks we set for them are relevant and interesting to them.

If you’re looking for ways to help your child develop their research skills, conducting internet research is a great option. By having them search for information on a particular topic, and
try making it more interactive. here are some ideas:

1. Let them choose their topic to research. This will allow them to explore topics that they are interested in, and they will be more likely to retain the information they learn.- It can be something that you are planning to buy like a new toy, game, or gadget, or something that you are planning to buy for the family.

2. Help them develop a list of questions to answer about their topic. This will guide their research and help them focus on finding specific information.- What are the features of the product? How does it work? What are people saying about it?

3. Have them share what they have learned with you or another person. This will encourage them to communicate what they have learned, and it will also allow you to gauge their understanding of the material.- They can write a blog about it like my son did or make a presentation using PowerPoint or Google Slides.

4. Encourage them to ask questions if they are unsure about something. This will help them to clarify their understanding of the material and to deepen their understanding of the topic.- My son was very excited and he asked me a lot of questions about the headphones he wanted.

5. Help them to critically evaluate the sources they find. This will teach them how to determine which sources are reliable and which ones are not.- Some reviews on amazon are biased and children need to be able to identify these.

Remember to give these tips to kids for researching online

1. Help them understand how to use search engines effectively. This means teaching them how to use keywords and Boolean operators to narrow down their searches.

2. Teach them how to evaluate the credibility of sources. Just because something is on the internet doesn't mean it's true! Help children learn to look for things like author credentials, date of publication, and whether or not the source has a bias.

3. Encourage them to use a variety of sources. Don't just rely on Google! There are other search engines out there, and sometimes it's helpful to use sources like databases or library catalogs.

4. Help them cite their sources properly. This is important for both academic research and avoiding plagiarism. Teach children how to create a Works Cited page or bibliography.

We are always shaming kids for internet usage but this is a great way to utilize their time on the internet for something beneficial. This will also help them in their future academic endeavors.
Don't forget to monitor their internet usage and the sites they are visiting to ensure they are staying safe online.
