lon Musk – the name evokes images of rockets, electric cars, and audacious dreams of colonizing Mars. But before he became a tech icon, Musk's story began as a curious and introspective young boy growing up in South Africa.
This post delves into his early life, exploring the experiences that shaped his remarkable journey and the lessons that can inspire young people today.
“The things that’s worth doing is trying to improve our understanding of the world and gain a better appreciation of the universe and not to worry too much about there being no meaning. And, you know, try and enjoy yourself. Because actually, life’s pretty good. It really is.” - Elon Musk
Musk's Early Life and Education
Musk, born in Pretoria, South Africa, displayed his entrepreneurial skills from a young age, selling homemade chocolate Easter eggs door-to-door with his brother and creating his first computer game at just 12 years old.
Despite experiencing difficulties in his childhood due to his parents' divorce, bullying at school, and struggling to understand social cues because of his Asperger's Syndrome, he overcame these challenges.
He left home as soon as possible and attended the University of Pennsylvania, where he studied economics and physics at an Ivy League college in the US.
After graduating high school, Musk moved to Canada with his mother, Maye, his sister, Tosca, and his brother, Kimbal. According to the school, he spent two years studying at Queen's University in Kingston, Ontario.
“People should pursue what they’re passionate about. That will make them happier than pretty much anything else.” - Elon Musk
A World of Books and Imagination:
Young Elon was different from your typical athlete. He preferred the company of books, devouring science fiction and fantasy tales that fueled his fascination with technology and the future. This introverted nature, however, made him a target for bullies.
Despite being bullied at school, Elon displayed remarkable resilience and a determination to overcome obstacles. These early experiences instilled a strength that would carry him through future challenges.
"I had a terrible upbringing. I had a lot of adversity growing up. One thing I worry about with my kids is they don't face enough adversity," - Elon Musk.
A Passion for Learning and Innovation:
At a young age, Elon displayed a natural aptitude for coding.
Musk got his first computer, a Commodore Vic-20, when he was 10, and two years later, he had already sold his first game, written in BASIC, for $500.
By 12, he had already created a video game and sold it to a computer magazine, showcasing his entrepreneurial spirit and ability to turn ideas into reality.
This thirst for knowledge and innovation became a defining characteristic, propelling him to pursue physics and economics in college, a foundation that would prove invaluable in his future endeavours.
Leaving South Africa for Opportunity:
Seeking more excellent economic opportunities in the United States, Musk left South Africa and embarked on a new chapter in his journey.
He attended Queen's University in Kingston, Ontario, and in 1992, he transferred to the University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia, where he received a bachelor's degree in physics and economics in 1997.
From Physics to the Internet Revolution:
He enrolled in graduate school in physics at Stanford University in California. However, his focus shifted. Musk believed that the Internet had much more potential to change society than work in physics.
At 24, Musk decided to move to California to pursue a Ph.D. in applied physics at Stanford University. However, with the Internet expanding and Silicon Valley flourishing, entrepreneurial visions began to dance in his head. Consequently, he left the Ph.D. program after only two days.
Entrepreneurial Spirit Takes Flight:
In 1995, Musk could have used more time. He founded Zip2, a company that provided maps and business directories to online newspapers.
This early venture laid the groundwork for his future successes. In 1999, Zip2 was bought by the computer manufacturer Compaq for a staggering $307 million.
This windfall allowed Musk to dive headfirst into his next endeavour – X.com, an online financial services company. X.com later became PayPal, which specialized in transferring money online and revolutionized online transactions.
"My proceeds from PayPal after tax was about $180 million, $100 (million) of that went into SpaceX, $70 (million) into Tesla, and $10 (million) into SolarCity. And I had to borrow money for rent." - Musk said in a 2018 interview.
“If you get up in the morning and think the future is going to be better, it is a bright day. Otherwise, it’s not.” - Elon Musk
Tesla
In 2004, Elon Musk invested around $6.3 million in a company called Tesla Motors, which was working on electric cars. He became a part of the team and helped run the company. Today, Tesla is the most valuable automaker in the world.
Besides making electric cars, Tesla also deals in solar energy by acquiring SolarCity.
SpaceX
Musk founded SpaceX with most of the proceeds from his PayPal stake, spending $100 million in 2002. SpaceX has since secured several high-profile contracts with NASA and the U.S. Air Force to design space launch rockets.
It's important to note that understanding budgeting and saving can set a strong foundation for responsible money management later in life.
“I always have optimism, but I’m realistic. It was not with the expectation of great success that I started Tesla or SpaceX…. It’s just that I thought they were important enough to do anyway.” - Elon Musk
