futurist mindset is essential for educators in the 21st century. Teachers need to be able to think about the future and plan for it, in order to best prepare their students for what awaits them.
In K-12 schools we are comfortable teaching the past; but not the future. We are still using a 20th century model for education where teachers stand in front of the class and deliver information. Students are then tested on their recall of that information. In the 21st century, we need to be teaching our students how to think for themselves and become life-long learners.
In order to do this, educators need to change the way they think about teaching. We need to become more student-centered and focus on helping students learn how to learn. This means giving students the opportunity to ask questions, think critically, and work collaboratively. It also means using new technologies that help facilitate learning.
The future of our economy and our society depends on the education of our students. We need to equip them with the skills they need to be successful in the 21st century. That means we need to start thinking about education differently and become futurist educators.
Some of the skills that a futurist educator needs include:
-Adaptable to current situations
Wasn't COVID a big example of how teachers were expected to learn new things everyday, managing with the resources at home. They needed to be adaptable to the ever-changing situation and still provide students with an education.
-Innovative
Futurist educators are always looking for new and innovative ways to teach their students. They are not afraid of change, and they embrace it. They use technology in creative ways to engage their students and help them learn.
During COVID, when there were lots of activities that didn't seem possible because of the limitations of having a classroom, teachers were hunting tools to manage this and they found various tools to cope up and help the students.
-Forward thinking
Educators need to be able to think about the future and plan for it, in order to best prepare their students for what awaits them. This includes being aware of current trends and preparing for changes that may occur in the future.
Students are now exposed to a lot of materials online and they are not limited to textbooks only, teachers at this time needs to scale up and accept these changes and take this as an opportunity to learn new things.
-Resourceful
In order to be a futurist educator, one needs to be resourceful. This means being able to use the resources that are available to them in order to best help their students. It also means being able to think outside the box and come up with creative solutions when needed.
There are resources available everywhere in abundance and teachers need to make the best use of it by understand the needs of the students.
-Open to change
As mentioned before, futurist educators are always open to change. They understand that the world is constantly changing and that they need to adapt in order to keep up. They are not afraid of new ideas or new ways of doing things.
In our rapidly changing world, it is essential that we have educators who are open to change and willing to adapt. This is the only way that our students will be able to keep up with the ever-changing world.
Learn from others to start, draw inspiration from educators are doing well and sharing their methods.
-Question traditional methods and approaches
Futurist educators are always questioning traditional methods and approaches. They want to know if there is a better way to do things. They are not afraid to challenge the status quo.
If you find traditions that are being carried on but have no relevance now, ask questions and propose change as required.
-A willingness to experiment
Futurist educators are always willing to experiment. They are not afraid to try new things, even if they may not work out perfectly. They understand that the only way to learn is by doing.
You will never know what methods work and what does not unless you try them out and see. Sometimes some methods that work with other educators might not work in your class and you should be able to accept it.
All of these skills are essential for educators who want to be prepared for the challenges and opportunities that the future will bring. A futurist mindset is not only about preparing students for the future, but also about preparing educators for the future. It is about being open to new ideas and approaches, and willing to experiment with different methods. It is about being prepared for change, and ready to embrace it.
We have come to realise that we cannot just prepare students for the future, we must help them envision the future world, the changes, the needs, and the possibilities.
So, what does it mean to be a futurist educator? It means being prepared for the future, and being willing to embrace change. It means having the skills to think critically and question traditional approaches. Be prepared for the future, and be ready to change the world.
