very kid has their reason for not wanting to learn
Considering kids are curious by nature, traditional schooling only limits their learning capability.
Aren't kids mostly packed with schedules these days?
A lot of children find it hard to learn and retain the overwhelming amount of information from school.
This puts them under too much pressure.
While we search for freedom when we grow up,
We do not think of letting our kids have the space to explore
All this leads to kids not being interested in learning
Reasons children dislike to learn
Lack of engagement: If the material is not presented in a way that is engaging or interesting to the child, they may become bored and lose interest.
Why children are not engaged in learning?
The teacher has been complaining about your kid not being focused in class, or your kids are distracted in the middle of doing their studies?
Instead of taking away their entertainment, we need to find out why kids are not engaged.
The concept of flow theory can help support the idea that lack of engagement can lead to boredom in learning.
Flow theory suggests that people are most engaged and motivated when they are in a state of "flow," which occurs when a person is fully immersed in an activity and completely focused on the task at hand.
In order to achieve a state of flow, the activity needs to be challenging, but not too difficult, and it needs to be perceived as interesting and enjoyable.
According to Csikszentmihalyi, flow occurs when a person is engaged in an activity that is challenging but not too difficult, and that is intrinsically rewarding.
In order to experience flow, a person needs to have a clear goal and be able to receive feedback on their progress toward that goal.
They also need to be completely immersed in the activity, with a sense of control over what they are doing.
When a person's experience flows, they often lose track of time and become completely absorbed in the activity.
They also tend to experience a sense of satisfaction and enjoyment from the activity, which can be highly motivating and lead to a desire to continue with the activity.
•Monotonous teaching methods: Some classrooms rely on monotonous teaching methods, such as rote memorization and lecture-style lessons, instead of allowing students to explore the material in more interactive ways.
•Uninspiring topics: Kids may become bored if they are not interested in the topic being taught or lack a basic understanding of the subject.
•Unrealistic expectations: High expectations from parents and teachers can lead to stress and pressure, making it difficult for kids to learn in a comfortable environment.
Difficulty level: If the material is too easy or too difficult for the child, they may become bored or frustrated.
Despite these challenges, there are still ways to help children become engaged in learning.
•Encourage exploration: Letting children explore topics that interest them encourages them to become more inquisitive and motivated.
•Incorporate technology: Incorporating technology into lessons can help make learning more interactive and fun for kids.
•Make it fun: Games, activities, field trips, and other hands-on experiences can stimulate a child’s curiosity and make learning enjoyable.
Set realistic goals: Setting manageable goals for children to reach can help them stay motivated and build confidence.
Lack of relevance: If the child does not see the relevance or importance of the material, they may not be motivated to learn it.
Why children do not see the relevance
For example, a child who is being taught advanced mathematical concepts may struggle to see the relevance of these concepts if they cannot see how they can be applied in their day-to-day life.
•No connection: If the material does not relate to the child’s life or interests, it can be difficult for them to find significance in learning it.
For example, if students are learning about physics, they may be more motivated to learn if they understand how the concepts they are studying can be applied in fields such as engineering, architecture, and space exploration.
Similarly, if students are learning about chemistry, they may be more motivated to learn if they understand how the concepts they are studying can be applied in fields such as medicine, environmental science, and material science.
•Ages and stages: Kids of different ages and developmental levels may have different needs when it comes to learning.
•Cultural differences: Different cultures may have different ways of looking at the world, and this can influence how children view certain topics. Children in India read a lot of books that are written by English authors, which may not be relevant to their own culture.
Despite these challenges, there are ways to help children relate to learning.
•Connect everyday life: Connecting material to real-world scenarios allows kids to see its relevance in their lives.
•Promote collaboration: Allowing kids to work together on projects can help them connect more with the material.
•Explore cultures: Encourage children to explore different cultures and their ways of understanding the world, as this will help them have a better appreciation for learning.
•Engage in meaningful conversations: Talking about topics that interest children and having meaningful conversations with them can help make learning more enjoyable.
Lack of autonomy:
If the child does not have any control over their learning, they may feel disengaged and bored.
Why children lack autonomy
•Too much structure: When learning activities are too structured, it can be difficult for kids to explore and express themselves.
•Lack of choice: Without the opportunity to choose their own topics or projects, a child may become disengaged in the learning process.
•Rigid rules: Too many rigid rules and expectations can make learning feel oppressive and unenjoyable.
Despite these challenges, there are still ways to help children feel empowered in their learning.
•Provide options: Giving kids multiple options or choices for activities or projects can help them feel more in control of their education.
•Encourage creativity: Allowing children to be creative and express their own ideas can help them feel empowered in the learning process.
•Allow risk-taking: Letting kids take risks and make mistakes without fear of judgment or punishment will help them reach new levels of discovery and understanding.
Reversing the traditional education model, where students first decide what they want to do and then learn what they need, is a concept known as "learner-centered education" or "student-centered learning". In this approach, students take an active role in their own learning and are given more control over the learning process.
By allowing students to choose their own learning goals and interests, this approach can help to increase their motivation and engagement in the learning process.
When students are learning about topics that they are genuinely interested in and passionate about, they are more likely to be engaged and motivated to learn. This can lead to deeper learning and better retention of the material.
In a learner-centered education approach, teachers act as facilitators and mentors rather than as the primary source of knowledge. Teachers provide guidance and support to students as they explore their interests and pursue their learning goals.
This can help to foster a sense of ownership and responsibility in students for their own learning.
Lack of support:
If the child does not receive enough support from teachers or parents, they may struggle to learn and become bored.
Why children lack support
- Access to resources: Self-learners need access to resources such as books, online courses, videos, and tutorials to aid their learning. They may also need access to specialized software, equipment, or tools to develop new skills or pursue specific interests.
- Mentors or coaches: Self-learners can benefit from having mentors or coaches who can offer guidance, feedback, and support as they navigate their learning journey. Mentors or coaches can help self-learners set goals, develop strategies, and stay motivated.
Here are some ways parents can help their children become independent learners:
- Encourage self-motivation: Parents can encourage their children to develop a sense of self-motivation by setting goals and helping them achieve those goals. Encourage your child to identify what they want to learn and why it matters to them.
- Teach time management skills: Parents can help their children learn to manage their time by creating a schedule that balances academic work, extracurricular activities, and downtime. Encourage them to prioritize their tasks and develop a routine that works for them.
- Provide opportunities for independent learning: Parents can provide their children with opportunities to learn independently by exposing them to different learning resources, such as books, educational apps, and online courses.
- Help them learn at home or take some alternate path to learning: Parents can help their children explore new interests by providing them with access to materials, tools, and resources. They can also support their children in finding alternate paths to learning such as taking classes at a local community college or pursuing an apprenticeship.
- Foster a growth mindset: Encourage your child to embrace challenges and see them as opportunities to learn and grow. Teach them to view failures as stepping stones to success and to persist in the face of setbacks.
3. Communities of practice: Self-learners can benefit from participating in communities of practice, such as online forums, user groups, or professional associations.
These communities provide opportunities to connect with others who share similar interests, exchange knowledge and ideas, and receive feedback and support.
4. Accountability structures: Self-learners need accountability structures to help them stay on track and measure their progress. These structures can include setting goals, tracking progress, and reflecting on achievements and areas for improvement.
5. Self-care practices: Self-learners may also need support in developing self-care practices to prevent burnout and maintain their physical and mental health. This can include practicing mindfulness, taking breaks, getting enough sleep, and staying active.
It's easy to blame kids and their lack of motivation or interest when it comes to learning, but in many cases, the problem lies elsewhere.
By understanding what learners need to be successful and providing them with the necessary support and resources, parents can help their children become independent learners. I wish more parents become a guide to their kids in their learning journey.
