di and I have traveled extensively across India by train, and with every journey, we've realized how much there is to learn from this fascinating mode of transport.
Indian trains are more than just a means to get from one place to another; they are classrooms on wheels, offering life skills, problem-solving, and cultural experiences in abundance.
Here are some of the lessons we've learned together:
1. The Art of Planning: Booking Tickets
Understanding the Indian Railway ticketing system is a crash course in planning and flexibility. From deciphering RAC (Reservation Against Cancellation) to navigating the waiting list and learning how unconfirmed tickets are canceled automatically, the process teaches resource management and strategic thinking.
Adi and I often sit together and calculate the probabilities of ticket confirmation, using apps to monitor availability and making alternative plans when needed.
2. Punctuality and Preparation
Getting to the station on time, especially in the hustle and bustle of Indian cities, is no small feat. We’ve learned to account for traffic, plan our routes in advance, and leave early to avoid stress.
Once at the station, the challenge of managing luggage on crowded stairs without lifts adds another layer of preparation and physical endurance. It’s a hands-on lesson in time management and resilience.
3. Navigating Social Etiquette
Indian train journeys are a microcosm of society. Understanding seat arrangements and the unspoken rules of sharing space fosters communication and empathy.
Adi enjoys observing how people negotiate for seats, interact politely (or sometimes not-so-politely), and form temporary communities during long journeys.
4. Resourcefulness with Comfort
Learning to ask for help is an essential skill. Whether it’s requesting bedding from the train attendants, figuring out how to use the toilets, or troubleshooting other challenges, train journeys provide countless opportunities to build confidence and adaptability.
Adi has even developed a knack for finding innovative solutions—like using our backpack as a makeshift pillow when the bedding service is delayed.
5. Managing Food and Hydration
Train journeys demand careful planning around food and water. We’ve learned to pack enough snacks and drinks to stay fueled during the journey.
Ordering food through apps that deliver to specific train stations has become a fun task we enjoy doing together, while also reinforcing lessons on budgeting and choice-making.
6. Efficient Packing and Mobility
Carrying and managing luggage while navigating crowded platforms is a practical exercise in efficiency. Deciding what to pack, how to pack light, and ways to quickly access essentials during the journey teaches us to prioritize and stay organized.
Adi often challenges himself to manage a piece of luggage independently, gaining confidence with every trip.
7. Timing Your Departure
Getting ready to alight at your destination, especially in the middle of the night or early morning, is another critical skill.
Adi and I have learned to set alarms, gather our belongings well in advance, and navigate crowded stations with ease. The coordination required for this stage of the journey is a lesson in teamwork.
8. Observing and Reflecting
Train journeys offer endless moments for observation and reflection. Watching the changing landscapes, listening to the chatter of fellow passengers, and experiencing the diverse cultures of India provide us with stories, inspiration, and an appreciation for life’s variety.
Why These Lessons Matter
Traveling by train isn’t just about reaching a destination; it’s about the journey and the lessons we learn along the way. These shared experiences foster independence, problem-solving, and adaptability in both of us. They remind us that life, like a train journey, is full of surprises, challenges, and opportunities to grow.
The next time you travel by train in India, take a moment to appreciate the learning opportunities around you. Whether it’s mastering logistics, connecting with people, or simply soaking in the scenery, there’s something valuable in every mile.
What has your experience been like on Indian trains? Share your stories and lessons—we’d love to hear from you!
