ducation is widely discussed among intellectuals, parents are worried to see the gap in the education system. The skills the students need to face the future are not being discussed in schools. The skills that are needed in today's rapidly changing job market are not being taught in schools. The future is uncertain, and the only way to be prepared is to have a wide range of skills.
Some concerns are repeatedly discussed by companies, they have always complained of students being way behind then the expected skills to fit in the job market.
Why is the education system still stuck with the old methodologies? It's often said that the rote learning method used in schools is just about cramming information into your head. It’s a method of teaching that encourages passive learning, and it doesn’t prepare students for the real world. Here are some concerns that are mostly raised when we talk about the present education system.
"Education is meant to take us to a future which we cant grasp"
So the skills that we require in today's industry are not being taught in our education system. The skills required for jobs of tomorrow might be very different from what is needed today. So the question is, how can our education system change to prepare us for jobs that don't even exist yet?
Some of the skills that are missing from today's education system are:
1. Collaboration and teamwork- In today's industry, businesses are collaborative. Employees need to know how to work together to get tasks done efficiently. However, most schools still operate on an individual basis. Students are graded individually and usually don't have to work with others except on group projects occasionally. This lack of collaboration doesn't prepare students for the real world where they will need to work with others daily.
2. Critical thinking- To be successful, employees need to be able to think critically about the tasks they are given and figure out the best way to complete them. However, most schools simply teach students how to regurgitate information instead of encouraging them to think for themselves. This lack of critical thinking skills can lead to problems later on when students are expected to figure things out for themselves.
3. Communication- To be successful, employees need to be able to communicate effectively with others. This includes both written and verbal communication. However, most schools only focus on teaching students how to write well. While writing is important, it is not the only form of communication that is used in the workplace. Students also need to be able to communicate verbally to be successful.
4. Creativity- In today's world, it is more important than ever for employees to be creative. With so much competition, businesses need employees who can think outside the box and come up with new ideas. However, most schools stifle creativity by only teaching students how to regurgitate information instead of encouraging them to be creative.
5. Time management- In the workplace, employees need to be able to manage their time effectively to meet deadlines. However, most schools do not teach students how to manage their time effectively. This can lead to problems later on when students are expected to complete tasks promptly.
6. Problem-solving- In the workplace, employees need to be able to solve problems that they are faced with. However, most schools do not teach students how to effectively solve problems. This can lead to difficulties later on when students are expected to figure things out for themselves.
7. Flexibility- In the workplace, employees need to be able to adapt to change. However, most schools do not teach students how to be flexible. This can lead to problems later on when students are expected to deal with change daily.
8. Stress management- In the workplace, employees need to be able to manage their stress to stay healthy and productive. However, most schools do not teach students how to effectively manage their stress. This can lead to problems later on when students are expected to deal with stress daily.
9. Research skills- In the workplace, employees need to be able to research information effectively. However, most schools do not teach students how to effectively research information. This can lead to problems later on when students are expected to find information on their own.
10. Social media skills- In the workplace, employees need to be able to use social media professionally. However, most schools do not teach students how to use social media professionally. This can lead to problems later on when students are expected to use social media for work purposes.
These are just some of the skills that are missing in today's education system. If schools start to focus on teaching these skills, then students will be better prepared for the real world and their future careers.
"We are preparing students for jobs that don't exist"
The education system has not changed much in the last few decades. The way our grandparents were taught is more or less the same way we are being taught. The only change is the addition of technology and different teaching methods.
The problem with this is, that students are not being taught how to be independent, they are not being prepared for the real world. They are not being taught how to manage their money, or how to be responsible with their money.
"The education system is designed to meet the needs of industry"
This is very evident from the way students are being taught. The focus is more on rote learning and less on creativity. The students are not encouraged to think out of the box, they are not encouraged to be creative.
The education system is designed in a way that the students who do well in exams and get good grades are the ones who are successful. But, this is not necessarily true in the real world. Many people have not done well in their academics, but they are successful in their fields.
"We need to find a way to educate the whole child"
The education system should be such that it caters to the needs of the whole child. The child should be encouraged to be creative, and to think out of the box. The child should be encouraged to be independent and responsible. Holistic learning is missing in the current education system.
"Education is not a preparation for life, it is life itself"
The education system should be such that it prepares the child for life. The child should be taught how to be responsible, how to manage their money, and how to be independent. The education system should be such that it helps the child to grow into a responsible adult.
"The purpose of education is not to produce people who can do things, but to produce people who can think for themselves"
The education system should be such that it produces people who can think for themselves. The child should be encouraged to be independent and to think for themselves. The child should be encouraged to be creative and to think out of the box. The education system should be such that it helps the child to grow into a responsible adult.
"The only person who is educated is the one who has learned how to learn and change"
The education system should prepare the kids to face the unknown not just robots who are programmed for a particular situation in a controlled environment. They should be able to adapt to change and learn new things. The education system should not restrict the child's learning but should encourage it.
"Creativity is as important as literacy and we should treat it with the same status"
Currently, the education system places more importance on literacy than creativity. This needs to change. Creativity is as important as literacy and should be given the same status. The education system should encourage creativity and should not stifle it.
"No significant learning can occur without a significant relationship"
The education system should focus on developing relationships between the teachers and the students. The teacher should be someone who the student can look up to, someone who can guide them and help them grow. The education system should provide an environment where the student and the teacher can develop a relationship of trust.
"Art and Music are at a lower hierarchy compared to mathematics and language."
In schools art and music can any day be replaced by maths and English. This is because art and music are not given the same importance as maths and language.
"If we value competition over cooperation, we will breed a society of selfishness and greed."
The education system should focus on developing cooperation among the students rather than competition. The students should be encouraged to work together and help each other grow. The education system should provide an environment where the students can cooperate and learn from each other.
Now education can happen anywhere not just from the building of old philosophies and methodologies so, parents should take the right decision to help kids develop the most needed skills.
