ecently my son was asked to survey his class, though he was told what is a survey still he was not very clear. I sat with him and explained what is a survey, how it is conducted, what the steps involved etc. He was very curious and asked many questions.

I showed him some examples too. Then we looked for some online surveys together and filled one. He was amazed to see that his answers were tabulated automatically. That's when I realized the importance of the internet in children's education.

When teaching kids about conducting a survey, there are a few things they need to know:

1) Keep the questions short and simple

2) Ask one question at a time

3) Don't ask too many questions

4)Stick to your topic

5)Don't put your views in the questions

6) Encourage children to ask their questions

7)There are many tools on the internet that students can use to create questions like Typeform, SurveyMonkey, etc.

8)Children can use email to invite others to answer their questions. They can also use social media to share their surveys.

9) Help them to interpret their results.

10) Teach them to write the conclusion based on their results.

My son is planning to survey health and lifestyle, his questions include :

1) How often do you eat breakfast?

2) How many hours of sleep do you get at night?

3) Do you eat fast food? If yes, how often?

4) Do you eat vegetables and fruits every day?

5) Do you brush your teeth twice a day?

6)Do you floss your teeth every day?

7) Do you play outdoors? If yes, for how many hours a day?

8) Do you watch TV or play video games for more than 2 hours a day?

9) Are you a couch potato or do you have an active lifestyle?

10)Do you eat junk food?

This is just one example where children need to use the internet for their studies. There are many other activities too where children can use the internet to learn and grow. But they must be taught how to use the internet safely and correctly. Only then they will be able to make the best use of it.

After he completes his survey, he will compile the results and present them in a graph or chart

Surveys are a great way for kids to learn about different topics, but they need to be conducted properly. By following the above tips, you can help your child to conduct a survey correctly and safely.

Conducting a survey can be a fun activity for kids if they are given the proper guidance. It is a great way to teach them about research and data collection. With the internet, surveys have become even more accessible and easy to conduct.

Children come with assignments that need research to be done at home. when assignments are given in class I mostly notice that the skills to conduct the work are not taught but the expectation is that it will be done. most of the time kids are not able to do the work and they get frustrated.

Children are required to go to the internet every other second to learn, research, and play. but, many of them don't have the skills to go about it. I think that it is important for children to be taught some essential internet skills so that they can make the best use of them.

Some essential internet skills that children should be taught are:

  1. Not to reveal personal information to strangers,
  2. Not to click on unknown links
  3. Not to download anything without permission
  4. When using information from websites, give credit to the source
  5. Always analyze the information they receive on the internet, not everything is true
  6. Keep passwords secure and do not share them with anyone
  7. They should be able to distinguish between official websites like UN, WHO, and personal websites
  8. They should know the difference between facts, opinions, perspectives, etc.
  9. Not sharing information with others without verifying
  10. Ask for Help

Today my son was doing research with a friend and heard him saying, "this website is asking me to download, I am not so sure about it". I was so proud of him for not downloading anything without permission and also for being able to analyze the information he receives on the internet.

He told me how he analyses information from several websites, "I take a look at the website, see how it is made, check if there are any spelling mistakes, see when it was last updated, and then decide if the information is reliable or not".

Then I asked him where he learned to do that and he said: "from you mom, you always tell me to be careful about what I read on the internet and to check if the information is reliable".

I was so happy to hear that, it made me realize how important it is for children to be taught essential internet skills. With these skills, they will be able to use the internet safely and correctly.

Internet is a powerful tool and if used correctly it can help children excel in their studies, but if not used correctly it can do harm. That is why children must be taught how to use it correctly and safely.

These days even small children have access to the internet in some form or the other. Hence they must be taught about internet safety from an early age.
