met Katy a couple of weeks back, a mother who decided to pull her son out of school when he was 8 years old and start homeschooling him.
She knew that her son would have the advantage of having more freedom in his learning environment but also he wouldn’t have the social interaction that comes with attending school.
Katy had done her research well and was very clear in her mind that homeschooling was the best option for her son. Katy understood that learning was not a problem for her son, but rather for his school.
Katy believes that
- If you show kids the way, they will figure out their own paths. She also said that understanding their interests and allowing them to explore those is the most important part of homeschooling.
- She says kids when kids discover something themselves then true learning happens.
- Tech can help in a big way but kids need guidance
Katy on online learning platforms
- While the trend of online learning is increasing, companies don't understand that every kid doesn't have a supercomputer
- They plan curriculums similar to courses for corporate
- They don't focus on different attention spans or interests
How kids learn - here is what Katy had to stay
- Kids need options
- They learn by doing
- Kids need the skills to use Youtube
- Learning is a process
- Teachers need to be the guide, they should help learners create a learning path
Katy says this generation is different
- This generation is good at self-learning
- They know more than us and we need to accept that
Katy's Advise to parent
- Parents need to be prepared or they get confused and overwhelmed
- Find a support system – it can be online or offline
- Giving your child the freedom to explore is key
- Don't set expectations for them to perform or excel, let them learn at their own pace
- Most importantly help kids stay motivated and keep learning
- Trust the process, it will work.
Katy's Final Thoughts
Homeschooling is a journey, and the best part of this is that no one has to do it alone. Each family should find what works for them and take advantage of the different resources available online or in their local community
Katy's son has explored 1000's learning apps and websites, he has learned many skills and most importantly he has enjoyed the learning process. He is now an educator himself and he motivates and helps other children explore their interests and develop skills.
Katy says homeschooling doesn't have to be about a curriculum or grades but can be about following your child's interests and providing an environment where they can explore their passions and develop critical thinking skills.
Katy says all of this would not have been possible if she had put her son in a conventional school. She is glad that she made the decision of homeschooling and trusts the process which has led to her son's success in life.
Katy and her son are building a learning platform to make homeschooling easier for others. She was very kind to show me how learning is planned in her platform and that's what makes it unique. Apart from all this, Katy is a very kind person who taught me a lot of things in that 1 hour.
She has planned activities in a way that kids can learn at their pace and explore different interests. You can check her website here
It's amazing to see how Katy empowered her son to take control of his learning journey. She has been a huge inspiration for many parents and students who are starting their homeschooling journey.
This story of Katy and her son is a great example that shows how powerful homeschooling can be when done with the right guidance, resources, and lots of patience. It is proof that parents who take up this challenge have all the potential to give their kids an incredible learning experience.
