ore people in India are growing lonelier as they age, leading to increased risks of Alzheimer’s, stress, and anxiety. Almost 15 million senior citizens live alone in the country, and among them, a staggering 75% are women.

In Tamil Nadu, the ratio of senior citizens living alone is 1:11, reflecting a broader national trend where the ratio of elderly people without any younger family members in the household is 1:7.

Recognizing this growing issue, Shantanu Naidu, a visionary and social entrepreneur, took a bold step in 2021 by founding Goodfellows, a startup dedicated to providing companionship and support to the elderly. “I realize over 15 million elderlies in India live by themselves.

While they may have found ways to fulfill their utility needs, they often lead isolated lives be it because of the loss of a companion or genuinely busy families,” Shantanu stated when launching Goodfellows.

With a small group of young, empathetic, and eager individuals, Goodfellows quickly became one of the growing startups focused on a social cause.

The need for such services is evident—more seniors are living alone, and while their basic needs may be met, the emotional and social aspects of their lives are often neglected.

Goodfellows aims to fill this gap by offering personalized companionship and assistance, ensuring that the elderly do not have to face the challenges of aging alone.

The Services Goodfellows Provide

Goodfellows offers a range of services to improve the quality of life for seniors.

Whether it’s spending quality time, helping them understand modern technology, accompanying them on walks, assisting with daily tasks, or taking them out for new experiences, Goodfellows is there to support and enrich the lives of the elderly.

Ratan Tata's Support

Goodfellows received significant backing from none other than Ratan Tata, the Chairman Emeritus of Tata Sons. Shantanu Naidu, who shares a close professional relationship with Ratan Tata, successfully garnered his support for this impactful venture.

Tata’s investment in Goodfellows not only provided financial backing but also lent credibility to the cause, allowing the startup to expand its reach and help more elderly people across India.

This partnership is a testament to the importance of addressing social issues and creating solutions that have a real impact on people's lives.

Inspiring the Next Generation

Shantanu Naidu’s journey with Goodfellows is an inspiring example of how young people can make a meaningful difference by following their passions.

By identifying a pressing social need and addressing it with empathy and innovation, Shantanu has shown that it’s possible to lead a fulfilling life that contributes positively to society.

Young people today have the power to bring about change, not just by pursuing traditional career paths but by daring to think differently and act on their ideas.

Whether it’s through entrepreneurship, social work, or creative endeavors, the key is to align your actions with your values and make a difference in the world around you.
