oday Adi and I were watching this video where we learned that Ants work in a community and help each other. We were amazed by how these creatures work together and how their cooperation benefits the community as a whole.
This got us thinking about why kids like-minded community, and we realized that it’s because they can learn from each other and cooperate to achieve a common goal. When kids are in a community, they feel supported and motivated to achieve their goals.
In a community, kids can also make friends who share similar interests. This allows them to explore their interests more deeply and learn more about the things they are passionate about.
I see when Adi connects with a friend by reading a similar book that he reads or playing similar games like him, he gets more deeply involved in the activity and enjoys it more. When he is with his friends, he feels confident and supported to try new things.
That is the idea of having schools and classrooms where kids can talk to each, share, and learn together but most of the time schools don't do many collaboration activities. If before the teacher starts talking about a topic, kids could collaborate and discuss their knowledge on the topic, they would be more engaged in the lesson.
I remember some concepts that I learned in school which were explained to me by my friends and I was able to understand and remember them better because we discussed them together.
When children explain to each other, they are also practicing their critical thinking and problem-solving skills. So, not only they are learning from each other, but they are also developing important life skills.
My son reads a lot but he doesn't have a friend to discuss what he reads and I often think that it would be great if he had someone to talk to about the books he reads. He shares the stories with me though and I enjoy hearing about the adventures of the characters in the book.
When kids can talk about their world with someone who shares their interests and experiences, they feel understood and supported. This allows them to feel confident and motivated to pursue their interests.
I think it’s important for parents to create opportunities for their kids to interact with other kids who share similar interests. This can be done by enrolling them in activities or clubs that allow them to explore their interests. It’s also important to encourage them to talk to their friends about the things they are passionate about
When kids feel like they belong to a community, they are more likely to cooperate and learn from each other. This can help them develop important life skills and pursue their interests more confidently.
I have seen my son helping out a friend in his online classes if they are struggling to access a folder, or if someone is unable to design a presentation, he helps them out. I have also seen him explaining a concept to his friend patiently.
Humans have always thrived in a community because we are social animals. We need to feel a sense of connection and belonging to be happy and fulfilled. This is especially important for children, who are still developing their identity and sense of self.
How can we help kids be part of a like-minded community:
- Using social media to connect with friends who have kids of similar age groups can be a great way to connect and find playdates. Many online communities can be joined where parents and kids can interact with each other. These communities can provide support and advice on various topics related to parenting and child development.
- Enroll them in activities or clubs that allow them to explore their interests. Encourage kids to talk to their friends about the things they are passionate about.
- Model positive social behavior by being an active member of the community yourself. volunteering in society can be a good idea. When kids feel like they belong to a community, they are more likely to cooperate and learn from each other.
According to NEA, Collaborative learning has been shown to not only develop higher-level thinking skills in students but boost their confidence and self-esteem as well. Group projects can maximize the educational experience by demonstrating the material while improving social and interpersonal skills. Students learn how to work with various types of learners and develop their leadership skills.
Now many innovators in education are talking exclusively about the importance of collaboration in learning. And this is not just for project-based learning or for brainstorming the next big idea. The research shows us that collaboration is critical for all kinds of learning, from the very earliest stages of education to the workplace.
If you enter a class where kids are discussing and not just listening to a one-way lecture, you will see that the level of engagement and learning is much higher. The reason is simple: When we are actively involved in trying to make sense of something with others, we learn much more than when we are just passively receiving information.
It's easy for adults to choose people with similar interests to hang out with but for kids, it is not that easy. You can go to join Facebook groups, and follow people with similar interests on Twitter. Talk to people on Quora or Reddit who follow similar topics.
But it's difficult for kids, So we need to help kids find their tribe, and encourage them to interact with other members of the community regularly. I have been actively hunting down opportunities for my son to meet other kids with similar interests.
