ast week, my 9-year-old son Adi asked me how much money I spent on paying for his school fee in the past. Now that we have come out of the schooling system, we can see how we spent so much on the heavy fee structure and got so little out of it.
We paid around 12000 dollars in traditional and online schools, which would have only gone up had we stayed in the schooling system.
This dilemma of paying for an education that only sometimes includes a return on investment is something many parents are facing today. With the ever-increasing tuition fees and other associated costs such as books, transportation, and living expenses, it can be hard to justify spending such vast amounts of money on schooling when there is no guarantee that one will benefit from it in the long run.
Parents are forced to make difficult decisions regarding their children's education, which often involves a tradeoff between quality of teaching and cost. With private schools charging exorbitant fees for their services, many parents are stuck in the grind of working 9 to 5 jobs to make enough money to pay for their children's education.
This needs to be more sustainable, frustrates parents and strains their already tight budgets.
We have been hearing a lot of stories about how kids are graduating from school without really learning anything that will be useful to them later in life.
I know people who, after completing their schooling, college, and master's, have no clue what to do with their life. Why can't the education system provide the proper guidance and focus? Why do we have a massive gap between the industry's needs and what the institutions teach?
The Problems:
The traditional models
- It is based on a one-size-fits-all approach which doesn't allow students to explore and choose their paths.
- There is also an absence of practical application of the theoretical knowledge obtained, leaving students without the valuable skills employers seek.
- Another big issue with the traditional education system is its inability to keep up with changing times. With technology rapidly transforming how we do things, the gap between what students learn in school and what they need to know to remain competitive in the job market continues to grow.
Students are stuck
- Youngsters need to learn what they are learning and why?
- Students are taught to memorize without really understanding the topics
- The curriculum focuses on getting good grades rather than an overall understanding of the concept.
- This is causing a lot of frustration and confusion among students throughout all levels of schooling.
The cost
Parents are finding it harder to save for their children's education due to rising costs, but the real problem here is that even after investing so much, they are still determining whether their children will get good returns from it.
The gap between traditional education and the Market needs
Most students graduating from schools, colleges, and universities are not picked up by the industry as they need to match their requirements. This indicates a considerable gap between the Market's needs and what an institution can provide.
Industries are experiencing profound transformations driven by technology, globalization, and shifting market demands. Employers seek candidates with technical expertise, critical thinking, adaptability, communication skills, and a deep understanding of real-world challenges.
Is there a way out? How do we solve problems for many students stuck in the education system and those who feel their investment isn't worth it?
Skill based Learning
One possible solution is to focus on skills-based Learning. This type of Learning ensures students learn practical, applicable skills they can use in the real world. It also allows for more flexibility as it doesn't require a student to stick to one subject and can choose from various topics and pick skills relevant to their career paths.
Global Exposure through the Internet 🌐
The internet has shattered geographical boundaries, bringing knowledge and opportunities to our fingertips. In developing countries, access to information has become a catalyst for change, opening once unimaginable doors. It's a game-changer for students who can tap into diverse perspectives, cultures, and resources.
Freelancing and Remote Work
The rise of freelancing and remote work has revolutionized the traditional 9-to-5. People are embracing flexible work arrangements that fit their lifestyles, and this shift is profoundly impacting education. As students witness the possibilities of working independently and globally, they reimagine their career paths. The once-linear trajectory is giving way to a landscape of endless possibilities.
Building Digital Skills Early 🖥️
In the digital age, technological proficiency is not just an advantage; it's a necessity. Schools are recognizing the importance of equipping students with digital skills from an early age. Coding, data analytics, and digital literacy are becoming essential building blocks, ensuring the next generation is ready to thrive in a tech-driven world.
Monetizing Skills for Diverse Backgrounds 💡
The internet has democratized entrepreneurship. It's now possible to monetize skills and talents in ways that support individuals from diverse backgrounds. Whether through online courses, e-commerce, or digital services, people are finding innovative ways to turn their passions into viable income streams.
Embracing the Educational Revolution 🚀
This new era of education isn't just a trend; it's a paradigm shift. It's about fostering a love for Learning, adapting to change, and empowering individuals to chart their paths. It's about recognizing that success isn't confined to the traditional model but thrives in the boundless world of possibilities.
But parents and students have been victims of the traditional education system for too long. How can we switch the mindset and bring more of a skills-based approach to Learning?
