oday I was helping my son complete his portfolio, I noticed he had written just one line for every picture. He had somehow managed to finish the task and was in a hurry to send the assignment, I sat with him to understand his work. I prompted him to talk more about the pictures and there he was talking and sharing with me what he learned, and what he liked and disliked, so then I helped him arrange the pictures and helped him with the alignment. I could see the happiness on his face. He was feeling proud of his work and was happy to have completed it on time.
There is no denying that parents play a pivotal role in their children's academic success. From providing moral support to ensuring that they have the resources they need to succeed, parents can make all the difference in whether or not their kids perform well in school.
Research has shown a link between family participation and academic success in fifty separate studies on parental engagement. And the earlier educators engage parents, the more effective they are at improving student achievement. Parent-child connections established in elementary school have shown to lay a solid basis for student success.
So, how can parents get involved in their child's education? There are many ways, but some of the most impactful include:
Helping with homework: One of the best ways parents can support their child's education is by helping them with their homework. This not only allows parents to see what their child is learning but also provides an opportunity to bond and work together on something positive. it also gives you a chance to meet their teachers and learn more about what's going on at school.
In an online setting, children need a lot of help from parents when clicking pictures, uploading, scanning, and creating files, etc. Grab this opportunity to help kids do technical stuff. I also make efforts to learn about different tools so that I can show my son these interesting tools for learning and he just loves them.
The other day my son was busy solving some questions from the division chapter and I just randomly gave him a trick to solve it faster, You should have seen the joy on his face, It was like he had cracked a big code. He happily solved all the related sums that day and could not help boasting about it.
Talking about school: Talking to your child about their day is a great way to encourage them to learn more. Ask them questions about what they did in school, who their friends are, and what they're learning. This will help them feel comfortable talking to you about their school experiences, both good and bad.
In online school or offline school, make the effort to know their classmates, talk about them and let get involved in things they share about class. Especially with online schools, children need a friend to share little things they have otherwise shared with their classmates, be their friend.
Attending school functions: Another great way to support your child's education is by attending school functions. This includes things like parent-teacher conferences, open houses, and school plays or concerts.
In an online setting, schools are making efforts to involve parents in various programs, don't miss those occasions, it makes kids proud when they see their parents involved in their school programs or activities.
Encouraging learning: Show your child that you value education by setting a good example. Let them see you reading, doing puzzles, or working on other projects. This will help them understand that learning is important and can be enjoyable too.
I often take time to check out book reviews to suggest some great books to my son, I also take interest in solving quizzes with him in Kahoot and Quizizz.
Getting involved at school: Another great way to support your child's education is by getting involved at their school. Attend parent-teacher conferences, help out with school functions, or join the PTA. This will not only show your child that you care about their schooling, but it will also give you a chance to meet other parents and get to know their teachers better. Sometimes it helps when your other parents raise queries because those might be something you would have wanted to ask.
My son's school does this "coffee with me'" activity monthly with parents and he makes sure that "I attend these. He sets the alarm for me so that I don't forget to attend the session.
