di has been planning to wake up early for cycling but we are just missing out on the motivation to get out of bed every morning. A couple of days back a similar incident happened and he was so disturbed that he didn't want to do anything.
I realized that many of us when we miss one part of the plan that we set for ourselves, our entire day is ruined and we feel so disheartened that we just want to give up.
That's why I thought of creating a system where everyday Adi had to complete something each day, so even if he misses out on one task he doesn't get demotivated and give up. How many times it has happened to us that we missed achieving a target and hence we lose interest in our goals and ambitions?
Of course, it's important to stay on task, but there are times when it doesn't work out and we need to be able to move on without giving up.
What to do to turn around a bad day?
Let's say you have woken up on the wrong side of the bad, you're having a bad day, you're in a bad mood or you're feeling bad what do you do?
Whether you've started your day on bad foot or messed up your day for any reason, will you choose to sabotage the rest of the day by being angry at yourself for not achieving the task or will you take it as an opportunity to look for another way?
You can either choose to feel discouraged and give up on your plan, or you can move forward and find a different solution.
I have had these experiences multiple times in my life where I had another plan but due to some reason, I could not achieve it that didn't stop me from moving forward and finding another solution.
For example, if I have crossed my yoga time on a particular day I can practice some quick stretching or Meditation to keep myself active and motivated.
It's important to stay focused on your goals but it's even more important to be flexible and create plans that allow you to make adjustments if something doesn't work out as planned. There is no shame in starting over, so don’t give up when the situation doesn’t go as expected. Re-evaluate the situation, make a new plan and keep going.
The mind tricks us, it tells us that now that the day has started not in the planned way, there is no point in doing anything else. You will be tempted to be lazy and give up, but don’t fall for it. The mind keeps telling you that you should have gone according to your plan, it tells you that you missed your exercise and you won’t be able to catch up, don’t listen to it. The mind might convince you to waste the rest part of the day by staying in bed, but going back into bed will ruin your day. There is still a chance to make the best of whatever is given to you and move on with your plans.
So try to not get demotivated when things don't work out as planned, be flexible with your plans, and take it as an opportunity to find a different solution. Don't forget that nothing is ever perfect and that it's ok to make mistakes. You just need to remain persistent and keep working on achieving your goals. Think of all the things in your life that you can look forward to by facing the day. Think of something that you have to look forward to
Here are some ways to turn around a bad day if you woke up on the wrong side of the bed
- Step back and reassess the plan when you wake up on the wrong side of the bed- One of the best ways is to take a few minutes to understand what can be done. We need to quickly see how much time we have and how we can replan our entire day to make sure we have a productive day.
- Focus on the next task in line- When something doesn’t go as planned, it is easy to feel demotivated and give up on the rest of the tasks. To prevent this from happening, stop worrying about what has gone wrong and instead focus on what you can do next.
- Be kind to yourself- Don’t beat yourself up for not achieving the task as planned. Instead, be gentle and encourage yourself to keep going.
- Take a break - If you are feeling too overwhelmed or exhausted then take a break and come back refreshed to start fresh on what is left in your plan.
- Try to find out what went wrong and whether there was something that could have been done differently - we clearly know that we have not been sleeping on time and hence it's very important to look at what is going wrong and how we can fix it. Once you have identified the cause it should not be a problem to work on it.
- Do some brainstorming and come up with alternative strategies- We planned to arrange everything before we go to sleep. when you take pause on a bad day and think of possible solutions, it can turn it around.
- If a particular task was missed, try setting a new deadline for that task or breaking it down into smaller chunks so that it's easier to manage. - Sometimes we become over-ambitious and take on too much. In such cases, you can break the task into smaller components and set short deadlines for each part. we have postponed our waking up time by half an hour, then we can try to set a new target of waking up early and adjust the rest of our day accordingly.
- Write a self-reflection- Reflecting on your day and journaling about it can help you get clarity about what went wrong and also give you a deeper understanding of the situation. This will help you pull out the things that are stuck inside you. The antidote to too much stress is reflecting and writing it.
- Change your mood- Focus on the positive things that will help you feel better. One of the simplest ways is to assess your emotional state, Get in the right frame of mind. Taking a shower can help to relieve stress. Vent out negative feelings and negative emotions by doing something positive. Listening to music will improve your mood, and convert a bad day into a good day. The benefits of exercise are not unknown to us, if you sweat out it will help you to get into a better mood. Take a walk outside for all you know the change of scenery can be great to lift your spirits. Change your mood with whatever suits you best.
- Make a List- Make a list of things that were positive that day. Write three things that are going well on a piece of paper. This will help bring positivity to you and you will feel grateful.
If you've identified what works best for you turning back isn't an option. You can look forward to a day of productivity and wellness even though you may find it difficult.
Whenever I am feeling stuck I don't let my day turn into a bad day instead I take a break to refresh. This way I am able to think and this helps me change my perspective in a given situation.
If you change the frame of mind you can turn it around to increase your productivity

By following the above steps, Adi was able to make a new plan and also have some extra time for himself. I believe that this system worked well for him and it can help others too when they don't achieve their goals
The key is to never give up, no matter how many times you fail or make mistakes. Adversities are part of life and it's important that you learn from your experiences and keep going. We cannot control everything in life, but we can choose to remain positive and find creative solutions.
Sadly we don't discuss these with kids, they need tools and strategies to keep moving forward when things don't work out as planned.
By teaching them the importance of resilience, problem-solving and collaboration, you can equip them with the tools they need to face any adversity that comes their way. You can create a supportive environment for them where they feel encouraged to make mistakes and learn from them.
